By arrangement with JM Dents and Sons. Mungo Park was born in Selkirk, Scotland in 1771 and obtained his surgeon's diploma in 1791 from Edinburgh University. Through the influence of Sir Joseph Banks, he joined an expedition to Sumatra in 1791. His successful fieldwork led to an investigation by the Africa Association to explore the course of the River Niger in 1795. On his return he set up a practice in Peebles and married. In 1805 he started upon his second voyage to the Niger, from which he never returned. His whole party, with the exception of a slave rower, died as a result of a fight with [local peoples]
