Donations advice

Cleaning out your bookshelves? Downsizing?

We love your donations – we can’t operate without them!

Please make it easier for everyone and look at the following advice before bringing in your gifts ...

Email: workroom@adelchbooks.org.au with your donations enquiries

Materials we don't accept

  • encyclopedia
  • VHS tape recordings or vinyl recordings
  • Reader's Digest condensed books
  • magazines such as the Australian Women's Weekly and Woman's Day
  • magazines older than a year unless they are very old or of special interest
  • magazine series in binders
  • DVDs not made for widescreen [generally those produced before about 2003]
  • Children's DVDs

Book condition

We *cannot* sell books that are:

  • water- or damp-affected
  • have a strong damp or other smell
  • dirty
  • in otherwise poor condition (tatty, spines illegible) - but old and rare may be the exceptions to this

So, please check your books before you bring them. Unsaleable books create disposal problems for us

Bags and boxes

If you can't lift or move them, neither can we!

Please:

  • choose smaller size bags and boxes, e.g.
     > supermarket bags *
     > smaller-size fruit boxes *
     > 1/2 dozen wine pack boxes
     * we reuse these
  • pack them evenly - have contents level with the top of the container
     > easier for stacking
  • consider the weight of the individual books
     > use smaller boxes for heavy books

Small donations

  • Up to two bags / boxes as above
  • Bring to the front desk during opening hours

Large donations (more than two bags / boxes) - to be delivered to our back entrance only

  • When
     > Wednesday, Friday or Saturday mornings only 10 am - 12
  • Other times
     > by appointment only
     > contact us via the emai address at the top of the page
(please don’t phone – our desk volunteers will be unable to assist)
  • Directions:
     > private car park on the south side of Wakefield Street
(S-W corner Hutt / Wakefield Streets - between 285 Wakefield Street and the café on the corner of Hutt Street)
     > car park No. 18 only
     > limited unticketed street parking is available nearby in Wakefield Street
     > a loading zone is adjacent the car park entrance

Extra large donations (about 2 dozen or more boxes)...

  • Are logistically difficult for our volunteers to manage
  • Email us on the address above to discuss, well before dropping anything off

Many thanks for your donations and your consideration
