Introduction by Leonie Kramer. First published 1865. Kingsley's second 'Australian' novel, published six years after 'The recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn'. As a 'story of two families' it has the romantic and narrative appeal of the earlier book, but it presents a very different view of Australia. The setting is the goldfields and the Omeo disaster, not the pastoral Arcadia 'before the gold'. It is seen not only through the eyes of the immigrant gentry, but also from the standpoint of a Gerty Hillyar, to whom England is 'a nasty, cold, ugly, dirty place' by contrast.
