de BANNEVILLE - The transvestite memoirs of the Abbe de Choisy

Peter Owen, London

  • $15.00

Translated from the French by RHF Scott. These memoirs provide a first-hand account of manners and morals in French society during the late seventeenth century. Young Choisy was only allowed to associate with the nobility. Dressed in girls' clothes he was much approved by King Loius XIV's brother. He studied for a bachelor of theology, and was given the Abbacy of Saint Seine, but after his mother's death he devoted himself to transvestism. In 1683, when he was 39 and thought he was dying, he swore to reform if he recovered. Subsequently he became a true believer and Church historian, travelled to Siam with a French embassy, and wrote an account of the voyage.
